Skin Booster Types Explained

Different boosters have different goals, mechanisms, evidence levels, and safety considerations.

Many overseas visitors hear product names such as Rejuran, Juvelook, Sculptra, Radiesse, PRP, exosome, or HA booster before visiting Korea. These names are often grouped under "skin boosters," but they are not interchangeable. This guide explains the main categories in simple language.

Type 1

HA-based boosters

Common goal: hydration, glow, fine lines, smoothness, dry skin, delicate areas.

HA-based boosters are designed to support hydration and skin smoothness. Some formulations are non-cross-linked or low-cross-linked and are used more for hydration than volume.

  • How many cc are included?
  • Is it full-face or partial area?
  • Is it intended for hydration or volume?
  • How long does the effect usually last?
  • Will I have bumps, swelling, or bruising after treatment?
Visitor noteHA boosters may be attractive for short-stay visitors because they are often positioned as hydration-focused. However, swelling, bruising, and unevenness can still occur.

Type 2

PN / PDRN boosters

Common goal: skin texture, roughness, pores, redness, scars, repair support, overall skin quality.

PN and PDRN are nucleotide-derived ingredients. In Korea, Rejuran is one of the best-known PN-based products. These treatments are often discussed as regenerative or repair-supporting skin boosters.

  • Is the product PN or PDRN?
  • How many cc are included?
  • Which area will be treated?
  • How many sessions are recommended?
  • How long will papules or swelling last?
  • Is it suitable if I have melasma or sensitive skin?

Type 3

PDLLA / PLLA collagen stimulators

Common goal: collagen stimulation, pores, texture, acne scars, laxity, longer-term dermal remodeling.

PDLLA and PLLA are collagen-stimulating polymers. Juvelook and Aesthefill are examples of PDLLA-related products, while Sculptra is a PLLA product. They are often used when the goal is collagen stimulation rather than simple hydration.

  • Is it PDLLA or PLLA?
  • Is the goal skin texture, acne scars, pores, or volume?
  • How deeply will it be injected?
  • How many sessions are needed?
  • What is the risk of nodules, and what should I do if lumps appear?

Type 4

CaHA boosters

Common goal: firmness, skin quality, collagen stimulation, volume support, diluted tightening treatment.

CaHA is a biostimulatory material that can provide structural support and stimulate collagen. It may be used as a filler or diluted for skin quality and tightening purposes.

  • Is the product being used as filler or diluted skin booster?
  • Which area will be treated, and how much product is used?
  • What is the risk of nodules?
  • Is this appropriate for my treatment goal?

Type 5

PRP

Common goal: texture, elasticity, wrinkles, barrier support, post-procedure recovery.

PRP uses platelet-rich plasma prepared from the patient's own blood. It is intended to support tissue repair through growth factors released from platelets.

  • How is PRP prepared — single-spin or double-spin?
  • Is activation used?
  • Will it be injected or applied after a procedure?
  • How many sessions are recommended?

Type 6

Exosome-related or secretome-based treatments

Common goal: post-procedure recovery, texture, photoaging support, redness, regenerative signaling.

Exosome-related treatments are often marketed as regenerative or recovery-supporting options. They may be used after laser or microneedling, or as part of skin rejuvenation programs.

  • What is the product source?
  • Is it approved for this use?
  • Is it injected or applied topically?
  • What clinical evidence supports this product?
  • How is safety and quality controlled?

Type 7

Pigment-supporting adjuncts

Common goal: melasma, pigmentation, dyschromia, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation support.

Some clinics may use tranexamic acid, antioxidants, vitamin C-related approaches, glutathione, or other adjuncts to support pigment-focused treatment plans.

  • Is this the main treatment or an adjunct?
  • Is it injection, oral, topical, or device-assisted?
  • How will recurrence be prevented?
  • What sun-protection plan is required?
  • Is it suitable for my skin tone?
Visitor notePigmentation treatment usually requires repeated care and careful aftercare. Visitors with Southeast Asian skin tones should ask specifically about post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk.
The right questionSkin boosters are not one-size-fits-all. The right question is not "Which booster is best?" but "Which treatment goal, ingredient, dose, depth, and schedule match my skin condition and travel plan?"
